Older homes / modern demands

Whole-home rewiring in Sacramento

An older home may have wiring that no longer fits the way you live. Start with an assessment of what is present, what is accessible, and what needs to change before choosing the scope of a rewire.

What to consider

A rewire starts with the existing system.

The right plan considers wiring, devices, protection, access, and the work you want the home to support.

Older wiring

Knob-and-tube, aluminum branch wiring, and deteriorated insulation each need a careful assessment. Their presence alone does not define the full replacement scope.

Grounding and outlets

Two-prong outlets may point to circuits without an equipment ground. We review the wiring and discuss appropriate grounding or protection options.

Circuits for today

A kitchen remodel, home office, or charging setup can change electrical demand. The circuit plan should reflect present use and foreseeable additions.

Access and restoration

Attics, crawlspaces, finished walls, and occupied rooms affect the sequence. Discuss opening and finish-restoration responsibilities in the written scope.

Make an informed decision

Whole-home or targeted work?

A focused repair can address a localized fault. Widespread aging wiring, inadequate circuits, or a major renovation may support a larger project. An on-site assessment is the way to make that distinction.

From first call to clear scope

Know the next step.

  1. Map the concerns

Share the age of the home, known wiring types, recurring symptoms, and renovation plans.

  2. Assess and design

Review accessible wiring, panel capacity, desired outlets and circuits, and likely access needs.

  3. Define the project

Discuss the proposed scope, permit or inspection steps, outage planning, and restoration before work begins.

Have a question about your project?
Talk with AAA.

Does knob-and-tube wiring always mean I need a full rewire?

The amount and condition of the wiring matter. Have a qualified electrician assess what remains in use before deciding between targeted work and a larger replacement.

Are two-prong outlets proof that the whole house needs rewiring?

No. They can indicate an ungrounded circuit, but the wiring must be checked before a solution is chosen. Simply fitting a three-prong receptacle does not create a ground.

Can aluminum wiring be repaired?

Possible options depend on the wiring and connection conditions. An assessment should identify where it is used and what corrective work is appropriate.

Will walls have to be opened?

Often some access is needed, but the amount depends on the route and the home's construction. Ask that access and finish restoration be clearly described in the proposal.

Does rewiring require a panel upgrade?

Not automatically. The panel's condition, available circuit spaces, service capacity, and proposed loads need to be evaluated together.
